Nice TV
I have had this TV for about a month and I really like it. The picture is clear, the sound is good, the controls are easy to work. It makes a funny chiming sound when you turn it on and off but I read the manual and figured out how to turn that off. For the price, it can’t be beat.

Disappointed in audio quality
I purchased the Samsung after my Sony Wega 19″ LCD’s video display computer board went bad. The Samsung got such good reviews, and there really isn’t a lot to choose from in a 19″ LCD that was under 16″ tall (to fit under my kitchen cabinets), so I chose the Samsung. I like everything about it pretty much except for the audio sound. The speakers are coming from the back of the TV and it sounds very tinny and echo-y. I’m so used to the phenomenal sound of the Sony Wega (which they do not make anymore) that I’m having a hard time getting used to the lower quality audio of the Samsung. I didn’t go with the Sony Bravia 19″ because of the little stand that is used to prop up the TV and the reviews were low because of that. I’m seriously considering, though, rethinking the Sony Bravia. It’s far more expensive, another $80-$100, but I was well-compensated from the extended warranty that I purchased with the original Sony, that the price really isn’t a factor. The Sony Wega was a perfect specimen of what a small LCD TV should be…too bad Sony discontinued it.

Excellent tv for a little space
I have to enter a caveat for my review upfront–we’re a minimal technology family tv-wise–we just watch VHS and DVD. We had to upgrade from a 13-inch picture-tube tv from the early 90s, though!! This tv fit the bill. We’re really happy with the crisp picture, the sound, and the size of the screen vs. how much room it takes up–a lot of picture for a little footprint. We have a bigger screen Sony elsewhere in the house, and the kids seem to prefer this one. A terrific buy from Amazon!

LOVE MY “TUBE”
I like watching thisw TV. I have DirecTV with HD DVR and a HD DVD player. The picture is amazing clear. I have the option to either listen through the amp in surround or through the TV speakers. Either works for me, you should use a sound sytem capable of switching and upgrading to HDMI 1.3.

SOmne of the features, such as automatic color adjkustment and such, are nice to have, but I think it works great without any of them turned. There are three “memory” settings for video. I set them up for the changes in room lighting and it’s very simple to switch.

Explaining the HDMI Cable Confusion

HDMI engenders more confusion than any other connector type with many different cable and component standards, interoperability problems, and false information about the quality and performance of HDMI cables. Moreover, many electronics and cables do not perform to the standard, so many combinations of cables and components don’t work. Additionally, cable performance, especially over long runs, have degraded picture quality.

Why Pay More for an HDMI Cable?

A common misconception is that all HDMI cables are the same–so why not just buy the cheapest cables you can find? The truth is that there are many levels of High-Definition digital video, and there are different levels of HDMI cables to connect them. High-Definition (720p/1080i) as we know it today is delivered at a 2.2 Gbps (giga-bits per second) throughput rate. Although high compared to standard DVD at .81 Gbps, it won’t achieve the best performance from High-Definition in the near future, which will require 10.2 Gbps and more. Previous generation HDMI cables developed to meet the original 2.2 Gbps standard are not certified for the new standard and may not pass the full bandwidth required to provide the best performance from these new products.

Unlike computer data, which is tolerant of data transmission losses, video data is not. Accurate transmission is essential. Most HDMI-compliant cables can transfer older versions of High-Definition (720p/1080i) data rate over short lengths, but have problems maintaining the same performance over longer lengths as well as higher data rates required of 1080p. HDMI cables are very sensitive to construction variances. With HDMI’s super-high data rate and microscopically tight tolerances, even mishandling the cables during an install can significantly affect performance. Monstrously inflated price, not justified by functionality
Some salesperson insisted that I bought one of these “for the quality”. “It’s worth every penny” he said. “Try it and you will see” he said. So, I did, after making sure that the store was going to allow me to return it for a cash refund, no questions asked.

I took this super-expensive wire home, I replaced the existing free HDMI wire that came with the satellite receiver and was connecting it to the TV with the Monster and… I saw no difference. Then, I unplugged the five-dollar HDMI wire that connected my Blu-ray player to the TV and plugged the Monster in its place and… I saw no difference. I returned this item to the store and decided to keep using my super-cheap or free HDMI cables because there is absolutely no difference between a five-dollar wire or a cheap-looking free wire that comes with some device that you buy and this expensive cable.

HDMI is all-digital for both sound and picture. As such, it either works or it doesn’t. There’s really nothing in-between. If a claim is made that thd Monster is ‘more reliable’ or that it ‘lasts longer’, I can’t see how such claim can be backed - does the fifty-dollar cable last 10 times longer than than the five-dollar cable? I’ve been using inexpensive HDMI cables for 1-2 years already and none of them has failed me yet. As for ‘the looks’, they are not important? I plug my cables in the back of things and, hopefully, I don’t need to see them very often.

By the way, I don’t challenge the claim of high quality for this cable. It looks well built. However, it is quality not needed and, in my view, not worth paying for. The way most of us use cables is: we plug them at the back of our electronic boxes and, if they work on day one they are likely to work in the exact same fashion on day 1000 because they are not going to be subjected to any physical or thermal stress and the materials used to build them are not degradable. While ‘quality’ was important for analog cables cable where a good quality cable make all the difference in the world, the digital wires either transmit the digits or they don’t. If they do, they all work the same, the $1 HDMI cable gives you the exact same ‘performance’ the $100, gold-plated cable does.

The claims made that these expensive wires allow more Gigabytes of data to pass through may be true but they are irrelevant. The HDMI is a published standard and there is a minimum data throughput that must be supported. If it is, then the device is HDMI compliant. If some cable exceeds the specified throughput, it’s nice but it’s irrelevant because no electronic component that’s HDMI compliant would attempt to push more bytes through the wire than the standard specifies because if they did, they’d violate the specs and would not sell very well. If your electronic component had an HDMI port that called for an HDMI cable that exceeded the HDMI published standards, then it would no longer be called an HDMI port but a proprietary, non-standard solution.

Excellent cable. Also bought the same length (1m) in the 1000HD. My set up is limited to 720p, but there is no discernable difference in the two cables. Both are excellent - producing noticeably more intense colors, better contrast, a sharper picture, and eliminating all pixelization. Ease of hook-up, as w/ all HDMI cables, is fantastic - I would highly recommend.

This is the one to buy
I bought 2 new HDTVs at a national chain. I bought two cables with the HDTVs. Needed 3 more (DVD players). Same cables, and saved a mountain of $$$$. Cables work great at 1080i and 1080p speeds! These are the cables to get and AMAZON is the place to get them. Cables work great!

Amazing!
This tv is amazing. The picture quality is very good. When we turned the tv on we were blown away. We have our own mini movie theater now! :)Blu ray makes a big difference. We’ve had no problems with it being too hot or having any problems with glare.

Terrible Terrible Terrible Experience - READ THIS!!
Please beware - it is NOT amazon that is selling this TV, it is OneCall, they DO NOT have white glove delivery as Amazon claims to have! Also, they have a return policy that states that they cannot take return of TVs over 20 inches. So they drop it off literally on the curb and claim you damaged it getting it in the house and they will not take returns! I am still fighting this one with my bank; they tried to warn me (apparently they have had numerous complaints about OneCall). Amazon is becoming like eBay, with unscrupulous merchants who they claim no responsibility for. I never got to see what this TV was like I spent $2,400 for nothing and it has not been returned yet.

Review of Delivery and Initial Impression
We just had this TV delivered today so I can’t give the all important review on longevity, but we are so pleased with Amazon and CEVA that I had to write an initial review for anyone shopping for the holidays. Like us you may have doubts about ordering something this big online and having it delivered. Trust me, this was easier (and cheaper) than dealing with the sales people in the stores and then trying to load it in your car or paying to have it delivered. Note: This was sold by Amazon, not a 3rd party.
We ordered late Thursday night and it was delivered early Tuesday morning by CEVA. I did use the tracking information that was sent to me and as soon as I saw on Monday that it had arrived in Dallas I called CEVA to set up a delivery. They are supposed to call, but with Thanksgiving this week I didn’t want to wait even a day. They said they could come the next day and gave me a time frame.
The White Glove delivery was perfect and 10 minutes after they left we were watching a gorgeous picture complete with the cable, TIVO and sound system set up. They don’t connect all that, but the TV is that easy. We’ve had the TV on all day and can’t get over how much better the picture is than our[...] 52″ Mit DLP. I’ll try to remember to update this review in a few months with more info on the actual TV.

good picture but questionable quality control
I purchased two of these in one day. The first one was basically DOA. Worked for about an hour, then lost picture (no, the timer was not on). Then it would not turn off, had to unplug it to turn it off. Plugged it back in and it was still in the on mode and started making a buzzing sound, I was ready for it to catch on fire. Took it right back and got another one, this one works ok other than the color wheel makes an annoying high pitched sound, like a dog whistle. Drives you nuts. Called Samsung and got a very unhelfpul person who sounded like she was 10 and was clueless and yawned on me while I was talking to her. Too bad this tv has issues because becasue the picture is stunning. The store is all out of them so I am either stuck with it or taking it back for a smaller LCD for more money. I wish Amazon sold this and not through one of their re-sellers, I only deal with amazon. 56 inches is perfect size for me and DLP is best bang for your buck. I would try an LED version but Samsung no longer makes the 56 inch in LED.

UPDATE- 11/18/08
Rec’d another set today hoping that the first set was just defective. Well this set also makes the same high pitched noise. It comes from the color wheel, not the fan. Maybe the people who do not hear this have a hearing problem or I just have good ears (my wife also hears it and finds it annoying). After about an hour it gives you a headache and when you turn the TV off it is such a sound of relief. It is a shame because the picture is beautiful but the annoying sound this TV makes makes it un-watchable. Guess I will have to settle for a smaller 52 inch LCD. Too bad bigger LCD’s (55 in an up )are not more affordable.

As amazing as advertised
Just got mine today…four days after ordering! Incredible picture, sleek styling looks great in my living room, and the current financing deal is almost too good to be true. If you’re in the market for an HDTV, you can’t beat this bang for the buck. Buy it…you won’t be disappointed.

Great Blu Ray player!
My first Blu player and I am enjoying it very much. Other reviews here seem to have gotten bad players. the netflix connectivity was very easy and works very well for my setup and was the main reason i purchased this player. 100% satisfied!

All is Good!
First off, I’d like to talk about the player, then I’d like to give some understanding to another reviewer.

I had originally bought a Sharp Blu-ray player and had difficulty with certain DVDs. It wasn’t bad, but it had some shortcomings, even after the updates.

I swapped it for the Samsung, and I have to say that I’m really glad I did. I got the BestBuy model for $350, and they had a deal (buy BatMan Dark Knight and get a $20 gift card).

This player does a great job playing blu-ray disks! Full marks here!

The update was pretty easy (hooked up via ethernet). Not perfect though. When I tried the update the first time, it said it couldn’t connect to the Internet. I know this was wrong because I had already streamed a netflix movie (not to mention authenticated my account to the machine). The next time I turned it on, it found an update. The reaction of the player when I pushed the enter button was extremely slow. I hit the button more than once which stops the update, even though the player says it is still connected. This might make it seem like the box is taking a very long time to update, when it’s not doing anything. The really bad part is, it tells you (like any firmware update) not to turn off the box during an update. Well, mine said downloading so I turned off the box, turned it back on, ran the update again and only hit the enter button once this time. It did the update and all was good. It turns off without any instruction as to what is going to happen, but turning it back on and checking for updates showed that it was up to date. I would deduct a star for the confusion, but since it is only a one time deal and all is well, I allow them to make it up to me.

The netflix streaming is great. The HD streaming is wonderful and the access we have to extra movies/shows is well worth the money over the cheaper Blu-Ray players. This more than makes up for the lost star. I haven’t even tried the Pandora streaming yet.

The player starts up way quicker than the other Blu-Ray player I had. The menu is easy to use and understand. Depending on your receiver, you may have to play with the audio setup to get the sound to work (mine had to be changed from the default setting to work).

Another poster mentioned a movie that had trouble with audio on a disk. This happened to us with the movie 27 Dresses from Netflix. It isn’t the player, it’s the disk. Blu-Ray disks are way more picky about scratches, dust, fingerprints, etc… Take care of your disks and if need be, polish/clean them as directed. A little finger grease will cause the disk to malfunction, causing jerkiness and no sound.

I am very impressed with this player. If you understand the problems I mentioned above (and Samsung should make notes of these issues in the manual or at least on-line) you’ll be impressed too. I wouldn’t swap it for any other blu-ray player.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get. I find that I will now even watch some of the commercials, which I rarely did before.This tv has really lived up to all exspectations so far. Very nice tv
Bought this tv 2 weeks ago. Awesome picture, especially with a little calibration. You can do it yourself, just search www.avsforum.com. I see the halo, but it’s not a problem for me. You can call Samsung to have the bezel replaced. The on/off issue is a thing of the past. The free blu-ray was a bonus too and works just fine. Take the white glove service with a grain of salt. Just a delivery guy taking the tv inside for you, but I must say delivery was quick, 5 days from purchase. 4 stars because nothing is perfect :-).

I bought four and am NOT disappointed!
I bought these RC80i speakers from Amazon as the surround speakers for my new 7.1 surround system. I mainly bought them due to the fact that the tweeters are on swivels. This allowed me to tune my system according to my needs. In this case, I pointed the tweeters at the nearest wall to bounce the audio down to the listening points.

I bought these along with the RC stand up line for the center channel and fronts. Polk is right, these speakers DO blend together.

I am very satisfied with my speaker setups. I consider these “prosumer” which means they are good but I know there are better.

The build quality is stunning. The magnets are HUGE and I felt that the way the mounts were developed, the speakers were going to stay in the ceiling forever! These are tough units and they SOUND great.

I have nothing bad to say about them. The manual was clear, the template they come with is VERY accurate and the install was a breeze. What more could you ask for? HIGHLY recommended!

Outstanding Picture Quality; Love It !!
I really wanted a SONY but their choices for a smaller unit (like 22inches) was small to none. I have been using this TV for about 4 months now. After researching for months I finally decided to try the Samsung and I am not disappointed. It has incredible picture quality and truly for a 22inch you do not need a 1080 (leave that for 32 inch and up). For the reviews you see about bad picture quality, that may be true for AIR stations but not for the digital ones. Since we are switching to digital, who cares about the AIR stations? FYI - I don’t have cable so I am reviewing this based on stright digital signals. Although you can get the digital signals without a digital antenna, I would recommend purchasing an antenna if you do not have cable. The signals will be stronger and you will pick up more channels. There are plenty of bells and whistles. My only regret is not waiting a few more months as the prices are much lower now. The only reason I didn’t rate a 5 is becuase it’s not a SONY. Other than that, it’s perfection!!!

very pleased!
This is the second Samsung TV I have bought and I love it! I was so happy with the 46″ I bought that I purchased this one for my bedroom. It is clear, sharp, and the design is sleek.

Very good sound
I bought this piece to match my Blu-Ray player. sounds great, rich bass, crisp highs even tho its 650 watts vs my 1000watt system the samsung sounds better. also the 1080p by-pass is for video only! not sound. no ipod hook up, but still a great unit.

Most bang for your buck
I have had quite a few surround sound systems in the past but I just got a samsung TV with a BD player so this was just complimenting both of the other electronics.

The only con i think there is with the product is that it has only 2 hdmi inputs where as they could have added just the one more hdmi port we need.

Just after listening to the radio on this thing which by the way comes with the antenna to hook up fm channels, I was in love with this thing, perfect bass and treble for my ears.

Installation is a breeze just hook your cables up and relax and listen to this baby make you feel like you are on cloud nine. Just the one thing anyone needs to complete there AV setup.

Thank you SAMSUNG to come out with such a great product and making it affordable for us.

Great unit for the price
The sound from this unit is more than I could have hoped for. As of yet I’m not using the rear speakers because of the location but when we replace the carpet we are going for the full 7.1 sound. I’m more than happy with this equipment.
